Originally established as a mill village in the 19th century, North Grosvenordale flourished around textile manufacturing and mill operations along the French River.

    North Grosvenordale was the site of early small textile mills, probably erected in the early years of the 19th century. The mill located here remained relatively small until after the American Civil War, when it and the associated water privileges were purchased by William Grosvenor, an investor from Providence, Rhode Island.
    The North Grosvenordale Mill still stands, partially housing business. It is located on Riverside Drive (Route 12). The front of the building is on River Street and basically spans the whole block. Across from the back of the mill, perched on a hill was presumably the local store which is vacant today.
    It is reminiscent of Ponemah Mill farther downriver in Taftville. Similar to Fabyan, which was previously known as New Boston until the Fabyan Brothers company came to town, North Grosvenordale’s name arrived with the industry as well. A man from Providence, William Grosvenor, established the mill here and farther downstream at Grosvenordale.
    It is four stories in height with large protruding towers. It is reminiscent of Ponemah Mill farther downriver in Taftville. Similar to Fabyan, which was previously known as New Boston until the Fabyan Brothers company came to town, North Grosvenordale’s name arrived with the industry as well.
